Steelers Play The Heroes
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Friday, April 17

American Football returns to Quibell Park on Sunday when Scunthorpe Steelers entertain Manchester Heroes in the Budweiser League premier division (3pm start).

The Steelers have stepped up to the top competition this year, and this will be their debut in the Budweiser.

They have 22 survivors from last season’s side which won the Amateur American Football Conference, and 28 newcomers.

Men to look out for are new quarterback Simon Huxford, who has replaced the now-retired Steve Hodgskin, and Paul Johnson, a “rookie” American footballer but former Scunthorpe United goalkeeper.

Admission to the ground is £1.50p for adults, with a fill colour 32-page programme thrown in.

Trophies for the game’s Most Valuable Players come from match sponsors UMB.

Champion Steelers Start With Slaughter
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Tuesday, April 21

Scunthorpe Steelers made a dream start in the Budweiser American Football League, thrashing Manchester Heroes 54-7 in a premier division clash at Quibell Park on Sunday.

The Steelers, who have stepped up to the Budweiser as champions of the Amateur American Football Conference, were always in command, although they had to defend doggedly at times in the first half.

And they sewed up victory with the help of a makeshift defence, a number of regulars being unavailable.

A series of early carries involving Pete Burns, John Strachan and Cliff Pargeter ended with Scott Alcock going into the end zone for a birthday touchdown, with the dependable Steve Rack tagging on the extra point.

But the Heroes reduced the arrears to 7-6 with the day’s cleverest play – a reverse which completely threw the Steelers defence.

Mark Gosnell raced across to halt the Heroes just short of the end zone, but the visitors had no trouble making the final few yards, and the extra point was good to level the scores.

The Steelers regained the initiative when Pargeter went over, with Rack again kicking successfully. But they needed a stout defence towards the end of the first quarter to stay 14-7 ahead.

58-yard rush

The Second quarter was a stalemate for a considerable time until Burns suddenly broke through to rush 58 yards and go out of bounds just short of the Heroes’ end zone. However, the extra few yards were made good by John Strachan, to pit the home team 20-7 ahead.

Burns himself then rushed 20 yards to increase the score, and Rack’s trusty boot made it 27-7 at half-time.

The Heroes were now on the rack and, as the game moved into the third quarter, the Steelers’ overall superiority became more and more apparent.

Maurice Newton was well found in the corner by quarterback Simon Huxford and Rack made it 34-7. Then Alcock and Rack combined to add a further seven points.

Huxford himself went over, with Rack again on target, and the only real question remaining was whether the Steelers would crash through the 50-point barrier. They did – with a Pargeter touchdown.

New quarterback Huxford was named the Steelers’ most valuable player and received his trophy from Paul Lormor, of sponsors United Merchant Bar.

Touchdowns: Alcock (2), Pargeter (2), Strachan, Burns, Newton, Huxford.

Extra points: Rack (6)

*The Steelers’ next match is against Crewe Railroaders on Sunday, May 3, at Quibell Park.

Heading For Old Trafford
By Nigel Fisher, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, April 25

Scunthorpe Steelers have the best cheerleaders. And that’s official!

The Budweiser American Football League has been approached by the Rugby League to recommend cheerleaders for the RL premiership play-offs at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, on Sunday, May 17, when a crowd of up to 50,000 is expected.

And the Budweiser officials have put the Steelets as No. 1 choice.

Steelers’ chairman Edwin Eddy said: “We are very proud to have been asked and I am sure that our girls will put on a good show. This is a great honour not only for the club, but also for Scunthorpe.”

The Steeletes will perform during both play-off games, RL officials being keen to provide the family atmosphere which is such a feature of American Football on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Steeletes, who train together for six hours a week, are: Karen Eddy (captain), Elaine Mumby (vice-captain), Danielle Sullivan, Annaliese Sullivan, Rebecca Eddy, Sarah Holmes, Katherine Allen, Kimberley Drennen, Sarah Bolden and Andrea Clutterback.

The Steelers have issued what seems a very conservative crowd estimate of 250 for their opening game in the Budweiser premier division.

Thrashed

It seems to me that many children were not included in the total, and that the actual attendance must have been nearer to 400. And that’s not bad going for an Easter game when many people are away from the area.

It just goes to show that American Football is catching hold of the sporting public.

Some of the spectators came from Grimsby and others, I gather, from Hull.

The Steelers thrashed Manchester Heroes 54-7, having stepped up as undisputed champions of the Amateur American Football Conference.

It was a fine team performance, and a typical one from the Steelers. Nothing too flashy, no one player relied upon. Just hard work.

Manchester  started well enough and were level at 7-7 early in the first quarter. But slowly the Steelers ground them down. And the visitors never scored a point after half-time.

Simon Huxford, the new Steelers’ quarterback, received the Most Valuable Player award from sponsors United Merchant Bar, though he must have been run pretty close by Peter Burns who led the way in rushing yards with an impressive 168, including a real beauty of 58 which so nearly ended in a brilliant touchdown. He was just forced out of play when approaching the end zone.

Steelers Are On The Right Tracks
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, May 2

Scunthorpe Steelers are determined to stop Crewe Railroaders dead in their tracks at Quibell Park tomorrow, 3pm.

Spirits boosted by a 54-7 debut success in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Division, the Steelers are raring to go.

“No injuries we know of, very confident and hoping for good weather and a good crowd,” said chairman Edwin Eddy.

The local side could be boosted by the inclusion of inside linebacker Marcus Thornton, formerly with the Milton Keynes Bucks. Otherwise the squad will be unchanged.

Crewe spent last season in the BAFC Anglo Conference Northern Division, finishing with a 7 and 3 record.

They were beaten twice by divisional winners Flyde Falcons and once by Coventry.

This year’s pre-season games have been disappointing, however, with a 45-12 loss against Flyde, a 35-12 defeat against Leicester Panthers and a 44-6 reverse against Manchester Spartans.

They are renowned for a good passing and running game and last term had the best English quarterback in the BAFL, in the shape of Gavin Meredith, plus one of the leading wide receivers, Steve Valentine.

Many fans new to American Football are wondering how the competition the Steelers have just joined operates.

The Budweiser League is split into three sections – National, Premier and Division.

Within the premier there are five conferences, the Steelers being in the Northern together with Leeds Cougars, Locomotive Derby, Manchester Heroes, Crewe Railroaders and Wrekin Giants.

The winners of the five conferences, plus the three best runners-up or “wild card” teams will go into the play-offs eventually producing two to play off for the Premier Bowl.

The Steelers have already been mauled 32-0 by Leeds Cougars in a pre-season friendly and seem likely to have to settle for qualifying through a wild-card place.

*The Steelers are keen to get themselves known off the field and become active within the community and will be giving an exhibition at the Appleby-Frodingham Gala on June 6 and attending a fun day at St Hugh’s School on July 4.

A Whitewash As Steelers Blitz Crewe
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, May 4

Scunthorpe Steelers kept up their bid for the Budweiser American Football League premier northern championship when they whitewashed Crewe Railroaders 34-0 at Quibell Park yesterday.

A biting northerly wind made passing and kicking very difficult and Crewe held their own in the first quarter in which there was no score.

Indeed, half-time was fast approaching before the deadlock was broken, Cliff Pargeter finding a way through what had until then been a solid defence for the opening touchdown.

Fortune then smiled on the Steelers whose attempted kick for the extra point failed totally, but the quick-thinking Pargeter took advantage of the loose ball from the poor snap to run into the end zone for two additional points.

Just before the interval, Steve Rack saw a short field goal attempt, which looked good, just curl wide in the fierce win.

Crewe continued to defend stoutly – aided by the Steelers giving away too many penalties – and it was not until the end of the third quarter that quarterback Simon Huxford rushed into the end zone to make it 14-0 and virtually sew up victory.

Offensively the Steelers had not been their usual efficient selves up to then, but there were signs of the old form returning in the final quarter.

Pete Burns rushed 45 yards for the TD, with Rack this time adding the point. Then Burns obliged again – this time from just five yards.

The final TD came from Dan Shirley – the former Milton Keynes Bucks player – on his debut, and Rack’s kick was good to round off the scoring.

Not the Steelers’ greatest performance by any means – and certainly not on par with their opening day 54-7 thrashing o Manchester Heroes – but a case of all’s well that ends well.

For the local side rather unluckily had two first quarter touchdowns ruled out for infringements, Burns returning a punt 40 yards and Maurice Newton carrying over from a similar distance.

Glenn Stowe took the trophy as the Steelers’ most valuable player, but they should really have given one to each of the cheerleaders, the Steeletes, for braving the elements in such skimpy clothing.

Touchdowns: Cliff Pargeter, Simon Huxford, Pete Burns (2), Dan Shirley.

Points After: Cliff Pargeter 2 (run), Steve Rack 2 (kicked).

*On Sunday the Steelers look to keep up their 100 per cent league record when they visit Locomotive Derby.

Steelers Chase Third Victory
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, May 9

Scunthorpe Steelers – having just disposed of Crewe Railroaders 34-0 – look to keep on the right track tomorrow when they journey to Locomotive Derby.

The Steelers can boast a 100 per cent record in the Budweiser American Football League premier northern section. But both their games so far have been on familiar territory at Quibell Park.

Locomotive Derby won the Amateur American Football Conference Steel Bowl in 1985 – a trophy the Steelers collected themselves last season.

Derby’s only regular season appearance so far was a disaster. “They got hammered by Leeds Cougars 78-0 two weeks ago,” said Steelers’ chairmen Edwin Eddy, “and had two players hospitalised and six injured. Moral is very low and Leeds think we should beat them.”

The Steelers report no fresh injury problems following Sunday’s victory over Crewe, which means Pete Burns and Dave Stowe will be fit.

Neck injury

Thankfully, Crewe No. 30 running back/linebacker P. Oakes, who was stretchered off at Quibell Park, was not badly hurt. After a trip to Scunthorpe General Hospital, where a neck injury was examined, he was released and able to join the players in the Steelers’ Bar for an after-match drink.

A healthy crowd of 400 watched the win over Crewe, despite the freezing wind.

The match statistics make interesting reading, Simon Huxford rushing for 100 yards net, ahead of Pete Burns on 85 and Cliff Pargeter 76. In all the Steelers gained 368 yards and los just 17.

Leading on tackles was Glenn Stowe with six unassisted and two assisted. Steve Stowe managed 4+1 and Sean Sargent 2+3.

Locomotive Halted By Tough Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, May 11

Scunthorpe Steelers kept up their 100 per cent record in the Budweiser American Football League premier northern section with a crushing 38-0 win at Locomotive Derby.

However, the Steelers still felt they should have scored more points against an undisciplined outfit.

Scunthorpe went ahead with a four-yard run into the end zone by Scott Alcock and Steve Rack’s point-after was good to make it 7-0.

During the first quarter the Derby quarterback was sacked by Sean Sargent and Andy “The Washing Machine” Jones.

In the second, Alcock made it 13-0 with a one-yard plunge between tackles, and Rack’s kick was good once again.

Steelers’ safety Paul Eddy picked off a 30-yard pass and returned for five yards to set up the next score by Simon Huxford – a quarterback sneak of one yard.

However, Rack this time failed to add the point after.

Alcock went into the end zone for a third time with a six-yard sweep around the right, but Rack was again off target with his kick.

Huxford’s 13-yard pass found Paul Wray waiting in the end zone – three Derby defensive backs failing to intercept.

Rack’s kick failed, but the Steelers were virtually home and dry with a 32-0 lead at half-time.

The Steelers relaxed in the third quarter as Derby improved and there was no further score.

But in the fourth, Huxford’s four-yard sweep around the right completed the scoring.

Touchdowns: Alcock (3), Huxford (2), Wray.

Extra Points: Rack 2 (kicked).

*The Steelers now have a free week with training at Ashby Ville on Sunday from 12 noon to 4pm. They return to action on May 24, journeying to Shropshire’s Wrekin Giants.

Alcock Knocks Derby Off The Rails

First Down
Saturday, May 16

Scott Alcock ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Simon Huxford added two more as Scunthorpe downed Derby 38-0 in a northern conference clash.

Scunthorpe improved to 3-0 and set up a conference-breaking clash with Leeds Cougars, May 31.

Alcock opened the scoring in the first quarter on a four-yard run, with Steve Rack adding the extra point.

Snagged

The Steelers broke the game in the second period with a 25-point burst. Alcock added his second from the one before Paul Eddy’s interception set up a one-yard sneak by Huxford. Alcock completed his hat-trick from six yards out and Paul Wray snagged a 13-yard pass from Huxford to make it 32-0 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Huxford wrapped the scoring with a four-yard keeper.

Out To Fell The Giants
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, May 23

Scunthorpe Steelers should have no problems polishing off Wrekin Giants when they visit Shropshire tomorrow.

Reports suggest that Wrekin are a far-from-impressive outfit who will have to improve considerably to make any impression on the Budweiser American Football League’s premier northern section, writes Nigel Fisher.

The Steelers, who were without a game last Sunday, have already recorded convincing wins over Manchester Heroes, Crewe Railroaders and Locomotive Derby.

But on the horizon is what promises to be the game of the season when the highly-impressive Leeds Cougars visit Quibell Park on Sunday, May 31.

The Cougars visited Scunthorpe in a pre-season friendly and handed out a stinging defeat to the Steelers.

It is generally accepted that the Cougars should be playing at a higher level and they are expected to defeat the Steelers. But the local lads would just love to pull off a shock.

The Steelers have already put themselves in a strong position to make the end-of-season play-offs.

The top side in each section of the league will qualify, plus the best two second-placed teams.

At present the Steelers have scored 126 points and conceded just 7 points. Comparing that record with those in other sections, they should have no real problems.

Steelers’ touchdowns: Alcock 5, Huxford 4, Pargeter 3, Burns 3, Strachan 1, Newton 1, Shirley 1, Wray 1.

Extra points: Rack 10, Pargeter 2.

No Stopping The Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, May 25

Scunthorpe Steelers stretched their 100 per cent record to four matches with a 31-6 victory against Wrekin Giants yesterday at Telford.

It keeps the South Humberside men at the top of the premier division north of the Budweiser League.

In a tough and sometimes physical encounter at the Sankey Stadium, the Steelers were superb in defence, not conceding a point until the final few minutes of the game when victory was already well assured.

They lost wide receiver Cliff Pargeter with a thumb injury towards the end of the first quarter, but it did not affect their balance or their determination.

Maurice Newton opened the scoring for them in the opening quarter with a 40-yard rush and Steve Rack successfully kicked the extra point.

Pete Burns got another touchdown in the second quarter to put Scunthorpe 13-0 ahead at half-time.

The third quarter of the match has often been one where the Steelers have been guilty of relaxing, but yesterday it proved to be the decisive period of the match as they grabbed three more touchdowns.

Newton got the first before Mel Lings rook advantage of a defensive mistake to go over for another after Wrekin had dropped a long punt downfield.

Simon Huxford completed the scoring with another touchdown for the Steelers before the home side finally broke through in the closing minutes.

The result sets the Steelers up for a cracking clash at Quibell Park next Sunday against Leeds Cougars who are also still defending a 100 per cent record.

Maurice Newton rushed for two TDS and defensive tackle Mel Lings recovered a blocked punt for another, Sunday to move the Steelers to a 4-0 record.

Their win over Wrekin keeps them on track with conference rivals Leeds Cougars and sets up a do-or-die clash this Sunday.

Newton opened with a four-yard run before Pete Burns burst over from the one. Newton’s eight-yard run made it 19-0 and Lings stretched the lead, running the blocked kick back five yards for the score.

Simon Huxford closed out the Steelers’ points bonanza with a three-yard QB keeper before Des McGowan put up Wrekin’s only points with a five-yard TD reception.

Steelers Fired Up For Crunch Match
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, May 30

Scunthorpe Steelers go into tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash with Leeds Cougars brimming with confidence.

Both sides have won all their four games to date in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Northern Section, writes Nigel Fisher.

But obviously that must change at Quibell Park tomorrow, where the local side are confident of attracting up to 1,000 fans – despite the county cricket match taking place up the road at Brumby Hall.

With the cricket starting at 11am and the American Football at 3pm, sports fans could begin the day at Brumby Hall, head over to Quibell and return for the climax of the cricket.

The Steelers went down 32-0 to Leeds in a pre-season home friendly.

But they have signed running back Maurice Newton, linebacker Marcus Thornton, Dan Shirley and defensive back John Osibote from Hull, running back Jim Boothroyd from Doncaster, plus ex-Grimsby Scorpion linemen Chris Osborne and Peter Cooley.

“Now we have got the strength-in-depth we lacked last time,” said Steelers spokesman Shay Eddy. “We have had a different offensive formation the last two weeks and we are working hard on a new defensive formation to shut Leeds out.

“We are fairly confident of containing their running game; the Leeds passing game could be a problem.”

The good news from the Steelers’ viewpoint is that arguably the league’s top running back, Leeds’ Tiggy Bell, is suffering with a hamstring injury. When Leeds beat Locomotive Derby 58-12 in their last outing, he went off and running back Eddie Harry stood in to rush for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

Some of the pundits in the fast-growing British American Football press did not give the Steelers any hope at all in their division, or of making the play-offs as top runners-up.

“Some of them look like being at Quibell Park on Sunday, and we would love to prove them wrong,” admitted Shay Eddy.

Last Sunday’s 31-16 win over Wrekin Giants saw Peter Burns increase his rushing yardage for the season to an impressive 417, Maurice Newton to 202 and Simon Huxford to 180.

Defensively, Glenn Stowe now has 16 unassisted tackles and 13 assists, with Sean Sargent on 10 plus 16.

Heading the points total list are Simon Huxford and Scott Alcock, each with 30 points, while Burns has 24.

Bell’s Deathknell For Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, June 1

Scunthorpe Steelers went down 30-6 to Leeds Cougars at sunny Quibell Park in their top-of-the-table clash in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Northern Section.

Both sides went into the big match having won all four of their games, so clearly something had to give.

Unfortunately for the Steelers it was their 100 per cent record which went by the wayside.

The turning point came early in the third quarter with the Steelers not far adrift. Quarterback Simon Huxford fumbled only a few yards from the end zone. The Cougars effected a turnover from which very impressive running back Tiggy Bell raced 87 yards for the best touchdown seen so far this season at Quibell.

After that the Leeds side never looked back, although the Steelers kept battling on to the end.

In the early stages of the game it had been very much even before an appreciative crowd of 900.

The Cougars went ahead with an excellent long-range aerial pass and reception – typical of their entertaining style – but failed to add the extra points, attempting a running play.

The Steelers again used their short yardage running game and good drives by Maurice Newton and Cliff Pargeter move them further and further towards the Leeds end zone.

Eventually, Pete Burns found a hole in the visiting defence and made the most of it to rush 22 yards for the equalising TD. The Steelers elected to kick for the extra point but big Steve Rack’s effort was charged down.

The Cougars were soon back in the driving seat, however, another long throw picking out Dave Mountain with the Steelers defence unable to effect sufficient cover. Tim Casey managed two extra points on the running play to put the visitors 14-6 ahead.

Leeds quarterback, Glen Stevens, was in impressive form throughout and a 38-yard “bomb” was only inches above Casey’s outstretched hands in the end zone.

Some good offence by the Steelers towards half-time, with Burns and Newton prominent, forced Leeds back towards their own end zone, and they had to defend desperately to keep the home side at bay.

Andy Squire was stopped just short of the line on fourth down, and early in the second half, Huxford, similarly placed, fumbled in that vital play which led to Bell’s magnificent 87-yarder for the Cougars.

That long distance shocker took some of the steam out of the Steelers for a few minutes, and chances of a comeback soon went out of the window.

Pete Haddon was picked out nicely for the two extra points to make it 22-6, then Eddy Harry (TD) and Dave Mountain complete the scoring.

The Steelers looked better defensively once former Scunthorpe United goalkeeper Paul Johnson came on to block out some of the airborne threat from the wide receivers.

But every time Tiggy Bell got the ball for the visitors, it meant danger. Most valuable players for the Steelers were Pete Burns and Sean Sargent, with Bell and Glen Stevens collecting honours for Leeds.

*The Steelers’ next game is not until June 14 when they visit Manchester Heroes. The next home match is against Locomotive Derby on June 28.

Wildcard Place On The Cards
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, June 6

Scunthorpe Steelers are still odds-on to reach the end-of-season play-offs in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Division, despite their 30-6 home defeat against arch-rivals Leeds Cougars on Sunday.

The top six divisional winners go through, together with the best two runners-up in the entire league. And it is in the latter “wild card” category that the Steelers are likely to fall.

Granite City Oilers (Aberdeen) rang the Steelers this week to see how they were doing, the Scottish side being in a familiar position.

Steelers’ chairman Edwin Eddy remains confident. “Unless we do something silly we will get there,” he forecasts.

The first of the play-offs will be on August 9.

Sunday’s defeat against Leeds was really disappointing because the Steelers were very close to drawing level in the third quarter when the visitors’ star, Tiggy Bell, raced 87 yards for a touchdown which changed the complexion of the match and knocked the stuffing out of the Scunthorpe lads.

The Steelers chairman moaned: “We should have won it but threw the game away.”

Warning

However, it appears that Leeds may be in trouble with the league for having insufficient medical provision at their homes games – despite a warning. The alternatives open to Budweiser seem to be a fine or, at the outside, the deduction of points.

Some of the Steelers have been in the wars themselves. Right tackle Graham Wright has injured knee ligaments, while defensive tackle Matt Hood has torn ligaments and broken a bone in his foot.

Today the Steelers were putting on a display at the Appleby Frodingham gala. Tomorrow there is no game because Steel City Giants have moved up a division to fill a vacancy.

The next fixture is at Manchester Heroes on Sunday, June 14 – the Steelers having thrashed them on the opening day of the regular season at Quibell Park.

Fans – and 900 turned up at Quibell Park last Sunday – should note a couple of changes to the schedule announced at the start of the season.

The away match with Leeds Cougars is now on August 2 at Elland Road.

On July 19 the Steelers will play Lincoln Bombers at Quibell Park for the Jubilee Bowl – as part of Family Weekend.

Signing From The States
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, June 13

Scunthorpe Steelers will have an American making his debut for them tomorrow when they visit Manchester Heroes in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Northern section.

Nicholas Skarlatos, who has just graduated from his college in Pennsylvania, is a very fast and tricky wide receiver. “He’s over here for two months helping with training,” said Steelers’ chairman Edwin Eddy.

“We are developing our passing game. There will be one or two surprises on Sunday.”

The injury-hit Steelers will be without Matt Hood, who has a broken bone in his foot, and there will be no Wright brothers, Graham being injured and Rick away on holiday.

So there will be something of a makeshift offense, with Shay Eddy returning for the first time this season, and Steve Rodgers pushed forward into the line, together with Dave Stowe.

“The whole of the right side has gone,” admitted Edwin Eddy. “So we have got to show our versatility.”

The Heroes, beaten heavily by the Steelers at Quibell Park earlier in the season, went down 48-0 to champions-elect Leeds Cougars last week. But Leeds star Tiggy Bell was ejected from the game near the end.

Tomorrow’s match will be at the Cheadle Town ground, kick-off 2pm. Transport leaves Ashby Ville at 9.30.

The Heroes and Steelers are regarded as the smartest two teams in the Budweiser. So it should be quite a spectacle – regardless of the scoreline.

Play-offs

More information has now come to light about the end-of-season play-offs.

The six champions of the divisions go through automatically, together with the two runners-up with the best records, one of which may well be the Steelers.

The team with the best record of all – and that could be Leeds Cougars with 10 straight wins – will be at home to the runner-up with the second best record (hopefully not Scunthorpe).

The second best of the champions will entertain the runners-ups with the best record (likely to be the Steelers).

The third best champions play the sixth best champions, and the fourth best champions entertain the fifth best champions.

All those ties will be played on August 16, leading to the semi finals on August 30 and the Premier Bowl on September 30. How about Leeds Cougars to meet Scunthorpe Steelers?

Steelers Are Demanding A Re-Match
By Nigel Fisher, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, June 15

Furious Scunthorpe Steelers are demanding a re-match after losing 14-7 at Manchester Heroes in a highly-controversial at times very heated Budweiser American Football League clash yesterday.

Chairman Edwin Eddy, clearly upset, stormed: “A lot of things happened. I would not like to have been in an arena with the old Christians and Romans.”

An official complaint is being made to the league’s governing body. “At best they will order a re-match,” said Mr Eddy. “At worst they will give us the game 1-0.

“The home team is responsible for the pitch markings – ensuring that the ground is up to standard, which this was not.

“There was a sub-standard ground, and facilities not fit for premier football. Only six players could change at a time – the rest were changing in open ground and rain. There was no proper warm-up and the match was delayed.

“There was an 11-yard end zone, instead of 10, at one end, and all the lines were crooked.

“The posts were too wide and not padded. There were no benches for the players and no pen. The grass was bumpy and worn and their No. 23 – already on a charge – was guilty of late hitting.”

The Steelers felt the standard of the officials put in charge of the game was very poor and that allowed a number of things that should have been penalised to go unchecked.

According to Mr. Eddy, even some of the Heroes’ own fans were appalled at what went on. He summed up the trip to Manchester as “a very sad and depressing day.”

Manchester’s head coach, Ian Obeng, was not available for comment at his office this morning.

Forget The Controversy!
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, June 20

Scunthorpe Steelers must put last Sunday’s controversy to the back of their minds tomorrow when they journey to play Crewe Railroaders in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Northern Section.

Furious Steelers’ officials are demanding a re-match after unsavoury goings-on at Manchester Heroes last week when Scunthorpe went down 14-7.

But the Steelers must knuckle down to beat Crewe convincingly. Bottom team Crewe have lost all four games so far, and went down 34-0 at Quibell Park earlier this season.

The Steelers will be without the injured Graham Wright, Chris Osborne, Matt Hood and Paul Eddy, while John Strachan is stepping down for the time being because of family commitments.

But there could be some new-style passing plays tomorrow, with the introduction of newcomer to the squad, American Nicholas Skarlatos, who was given just five minutes’ action in that bruiser at Manchester.

Transport will leave Ashby Ville at 8.30am tomorrow.

The Steelers have now made official protests to the league about the Manchester game, and to the Heroes and the Referees’ Association.

“We are expecting to hear something next week,” said chairman Edwin Eddy. “We have requested a re-match at a ground with Premier Division facilities, both pitch-wise and changing-wise, with better officials and a league observer.”

The Steelers were upset that the pitch was not marked out properly, that only six players could change at a time, that the playing surface was poor, and that the officials allowed a number of things to go by which, they felt, should have been punished.

Indeed, the whole day was so unpleasant for the Steelers’ party that Edwin Eddy likened it to the Christians going into the arena against the Romans!

New Boy The Star Of Steelers’ Show
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, June 22

Scunthorpe Steeler’s newcomer James Boothroyd starred in a 42-12 win at Crewe Railroaders in the Budweiser American Football League Premier northern section.

The quantity surveyor from Doncaster, in only his second appearance, rushed for four touchdowns. And one, of 60 yards, was the Steelers’ best of the season.

Victory was expected against the section’s bottom team. But the Steelers were pleased with the scoreline, which boosts their chances of qualifying as a “wild card” team of the end-of-season play-offs.

Crewe proved to be an improved team – they lost 34-0 at Quibell Park at the start of the season – and were well-organised off the field, with good facilities.

The Steelers went ahead in the first quarter with a close range TD from Pete Burns.

In the second, they stretched their advantage to 20-6 with Boothroyd twice going into the end zone and Glenn Stowe twice tagging on the extra point.

Boothroyd and Stowe combined to make it 27-12 by the end of the third quarter, Crewe having managed another nice passing-play touchdown to add to their second quarter effort.

However, there was no holding the Steelers in the final phase, Burns managing a 35-yard touchdown, Boothroyd adding another, Stowe kicking one extra point and Steve White nipping in for two.

The Steelers’ rushing statistics were pretty impressive. Offensively they made 352 yards in 53 carries, losing only 20 to record a net 332 yards.

Burns had 29 carries for 205 yards and Boothroyd 13 for 122.

Defensively, Scunthorpe managed 10 unassisted tackles and 43 assisted and Shaun Sargent had a sack for nine yards.

There were interceptions by Chris Carr and Paul Wray, while John Osibote recovered a fumble.

Debut For Murphy
By Nigel Fisher, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, June 27

Fans of Scunthorpe Steelers have been promised some fine entertainment tomorrow when Locomotive Derby visit Quibell Park in the Budweiser American Football League Premier Northern Section.

“It’s going to be a cracker against Derby,” forecasts Steelers’ chairman Edwin Eddy.

Scunthorpe include newcomer Mark Murphy – a navigator at RAF Finningly – who is described as a defensive end power running back. He was with the powerful Cambridge County Cats.

Also in action tomorrow will be rookie James Boothroyd, the Doncaster surveyor who starred in the 42-12 win at Crewe Railroaders on Sunday with four touchdowns, including one of 60 yards – the season’s best so far.

Appeal

Unfortunately Pete Burns, whose ability to get into the end zone has been so important this season, will be away on holiday.

Hopefully the Steelers will not miss him too much, and they will be looking to match the 38-0 triumph they enjoyed at Derby earlier in the season.

Scunthorpe officials are still awaiting the outcome of their appeal against the controversial defeat at Manchester Heroes two weeks ago.

A second “very succinct” letter from the club has gone to Budweiser League headquarters, giving details of the player regulations and stating why they were not applied correctly at Manchester.

“What we are asking for is a replay,” said chairman Eddy. “But it might take a while to sort out.”

He stressed: “It is not sour grapes.”

Whether the Steelers will make the end-of-season play-offs is still very difficult to judge.

The champions of the top six divisions will go through, together with the two runners-up from throughout the competition with the best records.

The Steelers currently have a better points difference than any other side excepting Northern leaders Leeds Cougars, who are the only outfit in the entire Budweiser Premier League with a 100 per cent record.

Steelers Storm In To Win!
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, June 29

Scunthorpe Steelers stormed back to defeat Locomotive Derby 38-26 in their Budweiser American Football League clash at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe, yesterday.

The local lads –playing against one of the lowest placed teams – found themselves 20-12 down at half-time but showed great spirit to come back and sew up what in the end was a comfortable enough win.

Derby went ahead early in the first quarter with a long run into the end-zone, only for Cliff Pargeter to level matters on the reverse.

The Steelers struck again just before the end of that quarter with a TD by Maurice Newton. But Derby enjoyed a purple patch up to half-time, scoring twice and tagging extra points each time to race 20-12 ahead.

However, the Steelers came out looking a different proposition in the third quarter, with 20 unanswered points.

Aided by a defence, which twice intercepted and ran back for good yardage, they twice reached the end zone through Cliff Pargeter and one through quarterback Simon Huxford, with Steve Rack and Glenn Stowe each succeeding with a PAT trick.

In the final quarter, John Strachan managed another TD, with Derby replying just before the end.

Steelers’ No. 64 Shay Eddy – currently sidelined by injury – said: “It was a very physical game but played in a good, sporting manner. One Derby player was ejected for a personal foul but the officials were excellent. They game was hard but very fair. Derby are a very god side and played better than their league form suggests. They don’t deserve to be near the bottom.”

Voted Most Valuable Players for the Steelers were Maurice Newton (offence) and Dan Shirley (defence). Maurice rushed for 145 yards, his longest carry of 27 yards resulting in a touchdown.

*The Steelers’ next league encounter is at Quibell Park on July 12 against Wrekin Giants (3pm).

3TD Cliff Has The Edge On Derby
Derby 26 Scunthorpe 38
First Down
Saturday, July 4

A three TD burst in the third period rescued the Steelers from an eight-point half-time deficit and set up a vital 38-26 win over Derby.

Derby went in 12-20 at the break through three TDS, including an 86-yard dash by Clifton Mitchell to open the scoring.

Scunthorpe’s two scores came from Cliff Pargeter and Maurice Newton.

But there was no holding the Steelers in the third period as Simon Huxford started the rally with a TD and Pargeter scored two more to complete his hat-trick and send Scunthorpe into the final period leading 32-20.

Steelers On Show
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, July 4

Scunthorpe Steelers take on the role of ambassadors for the sport of American Football today when they appear at two events.

This afternoon they have been at the St. Hugh’s Special School fund-raising event in Scunthorpe and also at the Saltfleetby gala.

With July 4 being American Independence Day, it is fitting that American Football should be on the programme.

The Steelers find themselves without a Budweiser League game tomorrow, and there will be training at Ashby Ville from 2pm to 6pm.

Their next league match is on Sunday, July 12 at home to Wrekin Giants. After that they have just one league game remaining – away to champions-elect Leeds Cougars at Elland Road on August 2.

However, sandwiched between is a challenge match against Lincoln Bombers on Sunday, July 19 – part of Scunthorpe Family Weekend.

Storm

After trailing at half-time last weekend, the Steelers stormed back to a 38-26 win over Locomotive Derby at Quibell Park.

“Third quarter was fantastic for us – the best we have ever had,” said chairman Eddy.

Scunthorpe , who are claiming a re-match with Manchester Heroes after losing a controversial tussle last month, have now been told that a league committee will rule on the matter at some future date.

“They are going to hear our case at least, which is half the battle,” Edwin added. “There is clearly a case for a replay.”

*Crewe recorded their first win in the Premier Northern section last week when they saw off Manchester Heroes 14-12.

Steelers May Win Fight For Replay
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, July 11

Scunthorpe Steelers return to action at Quibell Park tomorrow in the Budweiser American Football League with a match against Wrekin Giants.

They toppled the Giants 31-6 when the two teams met in Telford at the beginning of the season.

Wrekin have strengthened their side since then, though the Steelers are still confident of doing the double over them tomorrow.

Scunthorpe will however, be without key running back John Strachan who has now retired from the game because of family commitments.

“John has been with the club since it was formed, and obviously he will be missed,” said Steelers chief Edwin Eddy.

“But we have now got some good young players in the squad and I am sure they will be able to fill the gap.”

Tomorrow the Steelers will also be without another one of their running backs Cliff Pargeter, who is on holiday, but Pete Burns will be back in the squad.

The Scunthorpe lads have not been in action since they beat Locomotive Derby a fortnight ago.

There has however been plenty of interest off the field and the Steelers are now confident of getting their controversial match against Manchester Heroes replayed.

The match was played at Cheadle F.C. ground and before the kick-off the South Humberside squad listed a number of complaints to the match referee.

“The pitch was not properly marked out, the goalposts were too wide and there was no changing accommodation,” said Edwin Eddy.

“The facilities were generally very sub-standard and we were unhappy at having to play the match and not just because we were beaten.”

The Steelers went down 14-6 but they are confident they will now win their battle to get the game replayed once the match referee has forwarded the full facts to the Budweiser League.

Next weekend the Steelers are in action at Quibell Park again as part of the Family Weekend celebration.

They will play Lincoln Bombers for the Jubilee Bowl, with another match between the Junior Steelers and Junior Bombers being staged earlier in the day.

The Steelers are also to appear in an article about American Football which is shortly to be published in the Radio Times.

Wrekin Havoc Over Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, July 13

Scunthorpe Steelers slumped to a surprise 12-8 defeat against Wrekin Giants in a Budweiser American Football League match at Quibell Park yesterday.

It was a disappointing result and performance from the home side, who had beaten their opponents comfortably 31-6 at Telford earlier in the season.

But the Giants had done their homework well in preparation for yesterday’s game and effectively closed down Scunthorpe’s normal running game.

“Full marks to them because they deserved their victory,” declared Steelers’ chief Edwin Eddy.

“The real problem was that we seemed to be bereft of ideas from the sidelines.

“Our game tends to be a bit inflexible and we need to add more variety and improve our all-round versatility.”

The match was always finely balanced and it was Scunthorpe who looked to be on the right track when they led 8-0 at the halfway stage.

John Osibote opened their account with a safety in the first quarter, but suffered a knee injury in the process and was unable to take any further part in the game.

The Steelers increased their lead in the second quarter when John Strachan forced his way through brilliantly from 18 yards for a touchdown.

But Scunthorpe suffered a setback just before half-time when quarterback Pete Burns was ejected (sent off) for a retaliation offence.

Closed down by Wrekin, Scunthorpe were unable to play their normal game and had to rely on punting the ball much more than usual.

The Giants reduced the arrears in the third quarter through No. 5 Sharley Gray and it was the same player who broke through again for the winning touchdown with less than five minutes remaining of the final quarter.

Scunthorpe’s next Budweiser League match is on August 2 when they visit the powerful Leeds Cougars.

Next Sunday at Quibell Park they meet the Lincoln Bombers for the Jubilee Bowl.

Steelers Sack Their Coach
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Friday, July 17

Scunthorpe Steelers have parted company with their American coach Leland Sullivan.

The move comes within a week of their surprise 12-8 defeat against Wrekin Giants in a Budweiser League match at Quibell Park.

Sullivan’s dismissal was announced today by Steelers’ chief Edwin Eddy who felt quick action was needed after last Sunday’s setback.

“Leland joined us midway through the 1985 season and has done a good job for us, but I think we have gone as far under his command as we can,” said Eddy.

“I think we have parted on reasonable amicable terms and our four assistant coaches and senior squad members will take charge for the rest of the season.”

Mr. Eddy is already making plans for next season in which he intends to concentrate on improving the Steelers’ passing game.

“We have already started putting feelers out in America and I hope that we will perhaps be in a position to take up the full quota of five American players that we are allowed next season,” he declared.

But importing American players for the summer is expensive and the Steelers’ chief hopes to be able to interest other local businessmen in the Scunthorpe area to help with financial backing.

Sullivan Back In Business
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, July 18

Leland Sullivan, controversially sacked as coach of the Scunthorpe Steelers American Football team, is back in business.

Sullivam, from Waltham, has accepted an invitation to coach the Grimsby-based team, the Scorpions, who play in the UK American Football League.

“They approached me and asked me to help them for the final few games of the season,” said Leland, who spent nine years in college football in the States.

His dismissal from the Steelers was announced yesterday by owner Edwin Eddy and it came within a week of a surprise defeat by Wrekin Giants in a Budweiser League match at Quibell Park.

Eddy said he felt the team had gone as far as it could under Sullivan, who joined them in 1985.

“I think we have parted on reasonable amicable terms,” he said.

Sullivan disagreed: “He told me he was firing me; it was a complete surprise. I have been in touch with the coaches’ association because this sort of thing should not happen like this,” he said.

The Scorpions’ current coach, Tony Blackmore, will now be able to concentrate on playing.

Steelers Lift The Gloom
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, July 20

Scunthorpe Steelers brought some cheer to an otherwise gloomy Family Weekend at Quibell Park yesterday when they beat Lincoln Bombers 36-12 to keep hold of the Jubilee Bowl.

In an interesting game the Steelers proved just too strong for their opponents who play in the Amateur American Football League, which Scunthorpe left this year to join the Budweiser competition.

There were two touchdowns each for Pete Burns and John Strachan and one each from Simon Huxford and Steve White.

The Steelers also kicked a field goal as they avenged the 12-0 defeat of their Juniors earlier in the day against Lincoln Juniors.

When the Jubilee Bowl was first player for last year at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe beat Kingston Liberators from Hull.

Next weekend the Steelers will be travelling to the Grimsby Youth Gala.

Their last scheduled Budweiser League fixtures is on Sunday, August 2, when they visit the powerful Leeds Cougars who have already ensured themselves of a place in the end of season championship play-offs.

However, the Steelers are still waiting to hear if their controversial match at Manchester Heroes, which they lost 14-7, is going to be replayed.

The Scunthorpe officials complained about the state of the pitch and accompanying facilities and are confident the Budweiser League will order the match to be played again.

Double Target For Play-offs
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, July 25

Scunthorpe Steelers have won their fight to get last month’s controversial game at Manchester Heroes replayed.

The Budweiser League has now ruled that the match must be replayed, but the date is not yet known.

The Steelers, who lost narrowly and unexpectedly first time round, complained about the facilities and the tactics used by Manchester.

But Scunthorpe will need to win the replay and then defeat runaway conference leaders Leeds Cougars to stand a chance of qualifying for the end-of-season play-offs.

The first game should be easily within their grasp, but it will take a superhuman effort to see off Leeds at Bramley Rugby League Ground on August 2.

The Steelers have been pictured in the Radio Times this week after giving Radio Humberside’s David Golley the honour of kicking-off in their Family Weekend game with Lincoln.

They continue to promote the game tomorrow at the Tioxide UK Family Gala in Grimsby, when the lads will be putting on an exhibition of American Football skills.

On Bank Holiday Monday (August 31) they will be in Grimsby again to take on fellow Budweiser Leaguers Norwich Devils at the King George V Stadium (3pm).

The proceeds from the game will go to charity, but a sponsor is still being sought. Any firm able to help is asked to contact Shay Eddy (Tel. Scunthorpe 849771).

Following the departure of Head Coach Leland Sulliva, of Waltham, the Steelers have yet to make a new appointment. And it seems as though they are in no hurry to do so, with the end of the season drawing near.

Aiming To Tame Cougars
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, August 1

Scunthorpe Steelers take on the mighty Leeds Cougars in the Budweiser American Football League tomorrow at Bramley.

Scunthorpe badly need a win to keep alive their hopes of making the end-of-season play-offs.

But table-topping Leeds – winners at Quibell Park earlier in the season – are arguably the top Premier side in the entire competition.

They should really have been placed a division higher in the National.

Steelers’ No. 64 Shay Eddy said: “I am fairly confident we can give Leeds a good game.”

But the Steelers will be without Steve Stowe (ankle injury) and John Osibote (knee).

Doubtful are Mark Gosnell and Maurice Newton, while Glenn Stowe, Dave Stowe and Martin Russell are not 100 per cent, but expected to make the starting line-up.

A big crowd is likely at Bramley Rugby Stadium to see Leeds’ last home league fixture. And the Steelers are forecasting “a showpiece of football”.

The Scunthorpe party will be leaving Ashby Ville by bus at 10am.

The Steelers are no nearer replaying their game with Manchester Heroes.

The league ordered a replay after some unsavoury goings on in the first tussle, but now it appears that Manchester have lodged an appeal.

None of the wrangling is helping Budweiser in their efforts to get the league completed ready for this month’s play-offs.

The only date possible for the Manchester v Steelers game seems to be Saturday, August 8. But that does not leave much time for match arrangements.

Steelers’ Spirit Is Just Not Enough
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, August 3

Scunthorpe Steelers turned in a fighting display before going down 32-8 away to Leeds Cougars in the Budweiser American Football League yesterday.

Unbeaten Leeds struggled in the first half to come to terms with the Steelers’ stout defending and new-found passing skills.

But the Scunthorpe side were again punished in the third quarter.

The 300-strong crowd thoroughly enjoyed the fare served up by both teams.

“It was the best game ever seen at Leeds,” claimed Steelers’ spokesman Shay Eddy. “We threw for over 140 yards and rushed 151 yards. It was a very even game with a lot of good stats.

“It was 0-0 at half-time and Leeds were expecting to lose the game. But once again the third quarter let us down.

“We held them to 76 yards offence in the first half and held them two or three times on the two-yard line.”

Completed

Shay stressed: “The score does not justify the closeness of the game. I am not unhappy at all about the game – it was the hardest match they have had. No I think they will go right through to the Premier Bowl.”

Leeds went ahead in the third quarter with a touchdown from Paul Pryce, and Eddie Harry made it 12-0 before Pete Burns reduced the arrears with a six-yard run and Cliff Pargeter tagged on two extra points.

However, Leeds forged ahead with TDs from Tim Casey and Paul Pryce, plus two extra points from Hector Hurley, to make it 26-8.

In the final quarter, David McIntosh completed the scoring.

The one unfortunate incident for the Steelers was a bad knee injury sustained by Pete Burns who was stretchered off. However, by then he had done enough to gain the nomination as the Steelers’ best offensive player.

Star of the defence was Marcus Thornton, although special mention must be made of cornerback Paul Wray who tackled a member of the Leeds side almost on the Scunthorpe line, stripped him of the ball and raced up the field for a 41-yard gain.

The defeat means that Scunthorpe’s outside chance of making the end-of-season play-offs as one of the best Premier runners-up has gone. But they are assured of second spot in the Premier northern section, having won six and lost three games.

The Budweiser League has yet to say whether the outstanding match against Manchester Heroes will have to be played, and when. But there now seems little point.

“We are out of the play-offs this year,” said Shay Eddy. “But we know exactly what we can achieve. During the close season we will be working on the passing game.”

Pleasing Season For The Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, August 8

With nothing at stake, Scunthorpe Steelers are unlikely to play their outstanding game of the season, away to Manchester Heroes.

The Budweiser American Football League ordered the original game to be replayed. But the saga has dragged on, with Manchester lodging an appeal, which has not been upheld, writes Nigel Fisher.

With the league play-offs starting next weekend, the only possible date for the Scunthorpe and Manchester game is tomorrow. But the Steelers have heard nothing from the other side of the Pennines and are assuming that their league season is now ended.

They gave a good account of themselves last Sunday before losing 32-8 to Leeds Cougars – many people’s tip to win the Premier Bowl.

Although missing the play-offs, the Scunthorpe lads can feel pretty pleased with second place in the Premier Northern section – at the first attempt.

In recent game there has been a little more variety in the Steelers’ play – and that’s not meant as a criticism of the now-departed head coach Leland Sullivan who did a great deal to develop the team in its early days.

The Steelers look like having three charity games to round off their summer.

On August 31 (Bank Holiday) they will be at the King George V Stadium in Grimsby to take on Norwich Devils, gate receipts going to the Dyslexic Association.

A return game with Norwich is planned for September 6, while there is talk of a possible charity game at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe, on September 20.

Tomorrow, a few Steelers will be at Wembley for the American Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos.

The club’s presentation evening has been fixed for October 2 at the Royal Hotel, Scunthorpe, when Budweiser League administrator Dave Wakefield will be presenting the trophies.

GB Giants Head For Scunthorpe
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Saturday, August 15

Scunthorpe Steelers are poised to pull off a major coup for South Bank American Football by staging a special match between Great Britain and a Budweiser Premier Division All Stars side.

“This will be a helluva day for Scunthorpe,” declared delighted Steelers chairman, Edwin Eddy.

The match is designed to raise funds for the Great Britain team which is to take part in the European finals later this year.

Quibell Park has been booked provisionally for October 3, but some details have yet to be thrashed out before the fixture becomes a certainty.

Scunthorpe could well have some players included in the Premier Division line-up, and the match would be sure to draw a big crowd.

What A Way To Return...
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Tuesday, September 1

Scunthorpe Steelers’ American Footballer Mark Gosnell – just back from his honeymoon – was ejected (sent off) during the club’s 27-12 defeat of Norwich Devils yesterday.

The match – the Primo Windows Challenge – drew a disappointingly small crowd of 200 to the King George V stadium in Grimsby.

And the Steelers, who usually play at Quibell Park in Scunthorpe, have hinted that this might be their last game in Grimsby, where a number of their players live.

The Steelers’ points came in the form of touchdowns from Any Squire, John Strachan, Pete Burns, Simon Huxford and a 35-yard field goal from Steve Rack.

A field goal was something the Steelers failed to achieve during the entire regular season in the Budweiser League, which ended last month.

The Steelers were especially pleased to have top points scorer Burns back in the line-up, as it was feared that he had been quite badly injured in a recent league game.

“He wore a knee brace but looked good,” said club spokesman Shay Eddy.

The match was staged to raise money for dyslexia sufferers and there will be a return clash at Norwich on Sunday.

Rookies No Match For Crafty Devils
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, September 7

Scunthorpe Steelers slumped to a 32-12 defeat away to Norwich Devils in an American Football challenge match yesterday.

That was almost a complete turnaround from the score when the sides met at the George V Stadium in Grimsby on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Steelers were without eight regulars because of holidays and world commitments. But they were not too unhappy with the performance overall.

“All our rookies go on the pitch again,” said chairman Edwin Eddy. “And our passing game worked for two touchdowns by Simon Huxford and Steve White.”

Most impressive of the rookies was Nick Brown (cornerback come tight end) who turned on the style in his first fully-kitted game.

Norwich, who play at the Royal Norfolk Show Ground, and are a well-organised outfit, went ahead with a touchdown in the first quarter, and successfully ran for two extra points.

They then repeated the dose, and the Steelers replied when Huxford threw to White in the end zone.

But the Scunthorpe quarterback slipped in his own end zone and was dived upon to give Norwich that American Football rarity – a two-point safety.

The Steelers managed a second touchdown, but Norwich went on to sew up a comfortable victory.

Scunthorpe have a provisional booking for a charity match at Quibell Park against either Wirral Wolves of Manchester Spartans on September 20.

The proceeds will go to help dyslexic children.

Plans are now well under way for the big match at Quibell Park during the first weekend in October when Great Britain will take on the Best of the Budweiser Premier Division, plus guests.

The match will raise funds for the GB squad and will be used as a warm-up for the international against Australia at Elland, Road, Leeds on October 14.

American Football
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Friday, October 2

Great Britain’s American Football squad will be at Quiball Park, Scunthorpe tomorrow afternoon to take on the North Of England in a special international fund-raising match.

It will be preceded by the Junior American Football Association UK League Final between Crew Railroaders and Manchester Spartans.

Supported by a number of companies and individuals, the affair will start with a special VIP buffet at the Steelers’ Bar in the Royal Hotel. The JAFA final will be at 1pm with the main match kicking off at 2.30pm.

Presentations and the players’ supper will take place afterwards back at the specially decorated Steelers’ Bar.

This year the G.B. squad reached the European Finals in Helsinki. Their behaviour both on and off the field was exemplary, receiving praise from all the Finnish officials. The disappointment was that they could only manage fourth place.

Play-offs

But the finals came at a difficult time for the GB squad, as they coincided with the play-offs and finals of the UK domestic competitions – reducing time available for training camps prior to the European event.

Play in Helsinki was watched by representatives of the American NFL who were surprised by the standards reached by the GB squad and were convinced that a number of the team were capable of playing in Division One College Football in the States.

The players have put in their efforts and the supporters can watch the best the UK has to offer at Quibell Park. The proceeds will be passed to the BAFA to establish a special fund for future GB Squad Training Camps.

Spectacular

The afternoon promises to be spectacular. It is the only time this year that the GB squad will be in the North, offering the opportunity to see superstars from the Budweiser League clubs, including the London Ravens (the UK champions), Brighton, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Nottingham, Luton, Chelmsford, Manchester, Portsmouth, Slough and Streatham.

The North of England squad has been selected from teams within both the Budweiser League and the UKAFL, including Crewe Railroaders, Locomotive Derby, Leeds Cougars, Scunthorpe Steelers, Lincoln Bombers and Wirral Wolves who have been training over a number of weekends.

Coach George Aguado warns: “The GB squad had better have a good night’s sleep tonight as my lads are fully psyched to win the game. The atmosphere will be terrific.”

All Set For Big Match
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Friday, October 2

Eighteen members of the Scunthorpe Steelers’ American Football team have been selected in the 51-strong squad to take on Great Britain in a special international fund-raising match at Quibell Park tomorrow.

They are Chris Carr and Paul Eddy (safetys), John Osibote and Mark Gosnell (cornerbacks), Shaun Sargent (defensive end), Andy “The Washing Machine” Jones and Mel Lings (defensive tackles), Paul Wray (cornerback), Marcus Thornton (linebacker), Simon Huxford (quarterback), Maurice Newton, Peter Burns and Cliff Pargeter (running backs), Martyn Russell (centre), Steve Rack (guard), Shay Eddy (tackle), John Forrester (offensive guard) and Steve White (tight end).

Shay Eddy put the feelings of the North Of England team in a nutshell when he declared: “We realise we are the underdogs but we have everything to prove and nothing to lose.”

Three thousand programmes have been printed for the big match, which kicks off at 2.30pm.

‘North’ Glory In GB Showpiece
By Nigel Fisher, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, October 5

Scunthorpe Steelers played a vital part in the North of England’s shock 22-17 defeat of Great Britain in the big American Football match at Quibell Park on Saturday.

Scunthorpe tackle Shay Eddy managed the 51-strong North squad pack, with 15 Steelers, including quarterback Simon Huxford who threw three second half touchdown passes to cement a famous victory.

Urged on by an appreciative crowd of 1,000 the North caused probably the biggest American Football upset of the year on this side of the Atlantic.

But a delightful Shay had no problem putting his finger on the reason for the North’s triumph.

“We wanted to win more than they did,” he declared. “We have beaten one of the best teams in Europe and that’s only the third time we have been together. It was a great game.”

The end-of-season spectacular was organised to raise funds for the GB squad, which had to meet heavy costs, with games on the continent and training camps.

The day began badly for them when they had transport problems and did not arrive until 10 minutes after the scheduled kick-off.

The game was delayed for almost an hour and the North went ahead in bizarre fashion.

GB elected to punt down deep in their own half, but the snap looped high over the kicker’s head and went out of play beyond the end zone, to put the North two points ahead.

Leeds Cougars’ Tiggy Bell drifted in for a short yardage touchdown to give the North an unexpected 8-0 advantage.

But GB hit back in the second quarter when London Raven Mark King forced his way over to reduce the deficit to 8-6.

The internationals took the lead for the one and only time courtesy of a sweet field goal by Basildon’s Pete Masson.

But Scunthorpe quarterback Huxford then turned the game, throwing a TD pass to clubmate Steve White and picking out Tim Casey (Leeds Cougars) for two extra points to give the North a 16-9 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Early in the fourth Huxford and Casey combined to give the North a 22-9 lead.

But then Great Britain exerted real pressure, with Galdstone McKenzie (Hoods) going over for a vital TD and clubmate Allan Brown being picked out in the corner for two extra points.

At 22-17, the North’s hopes were hanging on a knife-edge. And, with seconds remaining, Great Britain had a great chance to sneak the winning touchdown, only a few yards from the home end zone.

However, the North defended heroically and Steve Hughes (Wolverhampton) dived full length to paw away what would have been the winning pass before it reached the intended receiver.

There was not even time for another play, with the victorious North side going off to collect their medals from Glanford and Scunthorpe MP, Mr. Elliot Morley.

American Football has made big strides this summer in Scunthorpe, and there’s every prospect of that trend continuing in 1988.

* In the Junior American Football Association UK league final, which preceded the big match, Crewe Railroaders beat Manchester Spartans 22-16.

It’s Seven Up For Steelers
Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph
Monday, October 5

Seven Scunthorpe Steelers have been included in the Great Britain squad to meet Australia in the first American Football Test match at Derby on Saturday, October 17.

Their inclusion follows fine performances in the North’s shock victory over Great Britain at Quibell Park on Saturday.

The magnificent seven are: Chris Carr (safety), Marcus Thornton (outside linebacker), Glenn Stowe (inside linebacker), Simon Huxford (quarterback), Martyn Russell (centre), Steve Rack (offensive guard) and Steve White (tight end).

Scunthorpe Steeler Shay Eddy, who managed the triumphant North of England squad, declared today: “It makes all the hard work worthwhile and we do feel that a lot more Steelers are worthy of inclusion.

“We are now on the international circuit and it is more than likely that an international will be played at Quibell Park in 1988 in the European Bowl.

“Quibell Park was recognised by the Budweiser League administration, the Great Britain management and everybody connected with football as an ideal venue.

“The stadium is something Scunthorpe and the council should be proud of.”

Steelers Are The Pride Of England

Sixteen Scunthorpe Steelers are now in the England squad to meet Australia in the first American Football Test at Derby on Saturday. And highlights of the match will be screened on Channel Four the following day.

Originally, seven Scunthorpe players were given their first national call-ups. But now that number has grown considerably.

Offense: Cliff Pargeter, Peter Burns and Maurice Newton (running backs); Steve Rack (left guard); Martyn Russell (centre); Simon Huxford (starting quarterback).

Defence: Marcus Thornton, Glenn Stowe (linebackers); Andy Jones (centre); Mel Lings, Shaun Sargent (linemen); Paul Wray (safety); John Osibote, Mark Gosnell (cornerbacks); Chris Carr (strong safety); Paul Eddy (safety).

The remained for the 60-strong squad is being drawn from Leeds Cougars, Locomotive Derby, Wirral Wolves, Manchester All Stars, Nottingham Hoods, Leicester Panthers and Birmingham Bulls.

Cheerleader Productions, who market the regular Sunday night American Football package on Channel Four, will be filming the best of the action.

Scunthorpe Steelers were intending to hire a coach to take their men down to the Test. But so many have decided to stop overnight in Derby that a fleet of cars will now be used, leaving from Ashby Ville at 9.30am on Sunday.

Spectators requiring ground directions or help with transport should ring Steelers’ chairman Edwin Eddy.

Steelers Show England The Way

Sixteen Scunthorpe Steelers helped England beat Austraia 34-20 in the first American Football Test at Derby on Saturday.

And Steelers chairman Edwin Eddy was delighted with the showing of his boys on their national debuts.

“As far as the Steelers go, they deserve full credit,” he declared.

“Every one of them deserved his place – they equipped themselves very well.”

A crowd of 1,200 was at the Moorways Stadium to see the first official Test between the two countries.

But although the Aussies were coached by Ray Malavasi, a former Head Coach of the LA Rams in America, they never got a look in.

With Scunthorpe players to the fore in the first half, England raced 22-0 ahead.

And it was only when some of them were withdrawn to give others a game in the second half that Australia managed to make the scoreline less punishing.

Steelers capped by England were: Cliff Pargeter, Pete Burns, Maurice Newton, Steve Rack, Martyn Russell, Simon Huxford, Marcus Thornton, Glenn Stowe, Andy Jones, Mel Lings, Shaun Sargent, Paul Wray, John Osibote, Mark Gosnell, Chris Carr and Paul Eddy.

Prominent at the start were Steelers’ Russell (centre), Rack (guard) and Huxford (quarterback).

Indeed, Huxford and club colleagues Pargeter interchanged for Leeds Cougar Tiggy Bell to open the scoring.

Another Leeds man, Tim Casey, also took advantage of a Huxford pass in the first quarter in which England went in 14-0 to the good.

By half-time the score had improved to 20-0, and Huxford fed another Leeds player, Sammy Pryce, in the third quarter for another touchdown.

When the Steelers were fetched off by head coach George Aguado to give some other members of the squad a run-out, the game became more open.

Indeed, England gave away 300 yards in penalties – something they could not have afforded without that first half points cushion.

The organisers of the game shipped in a dozen players from the Budweiser National League to team up with Premier players like the Steelers. But the move was not a success.

“The teamwork which was so evident at Quibell Park when the Northern All-Stars beat Great Britain was sadly lacking because of the inclusion of players who hadn’t trained with the squad,” declared Eddy.

“Although from a higher league, they didn’t fit in.”

At the end of the Test the players received marvellous trophies, made available by Scunthorpe firm Trophy World.

The one unfortunate aspect was that Cheerleader Productions never turned up to film the victory.

Steelers were led to believe the match would be shown as part of Channel Four’s American Football programme last night.

* There is now talk of an England v Ireland clash at Birmingham. No date has yet been fixed but it is likely to be towards the end of November.
